First released in 1989, the Air Jordan 4 was the brand's first shoe released worldwide and the first shoe in the line to feature an overmolded mesh upper . Another notable feature of the OG versions of the Air Jordan 4 was the Nike Air logo on the heel, a nod to how Jordan always seemed to defy gravity, even on the court .

The Air Jordan 4 Retro University Blue updates the classic silhouette with a suede upper in a familiar light blue inspired by Michael Jordan's alma mater, the University of North Carolina . The bright blue palette is contrasted by a speckled gray finish on the shoe's supportive wings and heel counter, which sport a raised Jumpman in black .

Black accents are also found on the wing eyelets, sole and Jumpman logo on the heel counter . Secondary Jumpman branding elements adorn the woven tongue label, which has a white and blue lining to emphasize the shoe's UNC theme .

The Air Jordan 4 Retro University Blue was released on April 28, 2021 through Nike and select retailers . The shoe was also released in a GS version with a suede upper and a similar shade of blue as the adult model . The kids' version of the shoe has been updated with a smooth suede upper reminiscent of the OG White Cement colorway and comes in a UNC-inspired color scheme .
